The Martin Plant in Nebraska had an outstanding safety record marred by one tragic accident. A B-25 Mitchell bomber from nearby Offutt Air Field crashed through the roof of the assembly building. Three crew members were killed, and a fourth was critically injured. The plane lodged in the girders after tearing a 75-foot hole in the roof. As the plane burned, much of its ammunition exploded. One B-26 on the assembly line beneath the B-25 was destroyed and another was damaged. Fortunately, most bomber plant workers were eating lunch outside the building. There were two other plane accidents involving Martin-Nebraska personnel, one of which resulted in the loss of two test pilots. But, the company did not have a single fatal industrial accident in more than 108 million man hours of labor.
