Nebraskans Tighten their Belts

Because of the military's priority, there were home front shortages of many essential items. Nebraskans, like the rest of the U.S., were encouraged to support the war effort by eating less at mealtimes, by collecting scrap metal that could be made into bombs or by car pooling and cutting the amount of gas consumed. Voluntary sacrifices were coupled with government rationing to ensure that the general public exerted a maximum effort to support the American troops fighting in foreign lands.
